PS5 VR Headset: Why PS VR2 Is the Only Option, and Where to Find One
We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. How this works
PS VR2 is the only VR headset that plays PS5 VR games. It connects to the PS5 with a single USB-C cable. But on 15 October 2026, Sony's US PlayStation Direct store no longer listed the headset, and in September VR.org found no new units sold by major US retailers themselves, only marketplace, used or refurbished offers. The original PS VR works on a PS5 only for its older PS4-era games, with a camera adaptor Sony stopped supplying in 2024.
If you can't find one: buy used only from a seller with a clear return policy, or choose a standalone headset such as Meta Quest 3S, which plays its own VR games without a console.
A PS5 doesn't work with Meta Quest or PC VR headsets for its VR games. Sony's own PS VR2 is the only headset made for them, so the real buying question in 2026 is where you can still get one, and at what price.
Start with the compatibility table, then the current stock picture. If PS VR2 is out of reach, the alternatives section explains what each option can and can't play.

Availability and source notes
Checked 15 October 2026. Sony's US "Shop PS VR2" page listed only the PS VR2 Sense Controller Charging Station, and the headset's US product page returned "Page Not Found". Sony's UK store still had a PS VR2 product page. In September, VR.org found no new units at Sony's US store or major US retailers. Sony has not announced that PS VR2 is discontinued, and it hasn't explained the shortage. Stock can change quickly; check before you buy.

Can you still buy PS VR2?
New units are hard to find in the US. This is what we found on 15 October 2026:
- Sony’s US store: the “Shop PS VR2” page listed only the PS VR2 Sense Controller Charging Station, and the headset’s product page returned “Page Not Found”.
- Sony’s UK store: still had a PS VR2 product page, at £399.99 in VR.org’s September check.
- Other US retailers: in September, VR.org found Best Buy’s only new units coming from marketplace sellers at $855.20 and $894, with refurbished units from $549, while Walmart and GameStop listed pre-owned or refurbished units.
Sony’s recommended price has been $399.99 since March 2025, for the standard headset and the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle, according to the PlayStation Blog.
If you buy used, check what’s included (both Sense controllers and the charging cable), the seller’s rating and the return window, and compare the price with Sony’s $399.99. Test the headset’s eye tracking and controllers while you can still return it.

The original PS VR on PS5
The original PlayStation VR, made for PS4, also connects to a PS5, but it only plays supported PS VR games, the ones made for PS4. Sony’s PS VR page says you need the PlayStation Camera for PS4 (model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2) and a PlayStation Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera doesn’t work with PS VR.
The catch is the adaptor. Sony’s important notice says that “As of November 26th 2024, or until supplies last, the PlayStation Camera adaptor will no longer be available.” A used PS VR is only worth considering if it comes with the camera and the adaptor, and you mainly want those older PS VR games. Our PlayStation VR review covers the original headset.
If you can't find PS VR2
- Meta Quest 3S or Quest 3: standalone headsets with their own game library. They don’t play PS5 VR games, but they need no console and can also connect to a gaming PC. Our Quest 3 vs PS VR2 comparison explains the trade-off, and our Quest 3 vs Quest 3S comparison helps you choose between them.

- Wait for stock: Sony hasn’t said PS VR2 is discontinued. If PS5 VR games are the reason you want VR, watch PlayStation Direct and major retailers rather than paying well above $399.99.
