Best VR headset: our picks by setup

For most people, Meta Quest 3S is the VR headset to buy. It plays VR games on its own, with no console or PC, and at $349.99 for 128 GB it's the lowest-priced headset in this guide. Pay $250 more for Meta Quest 3 if you want sharper pancake lenses or plan to play PC VR games.

PS5 owners: PS VR2 is the only headset for PS5 VR games, though Sony's US store no longer lists it. Steam library on a gaming PC: Valve Steam Frame, if you can wait for stock, or Quest 3 in the meantime. Films and apps rather than games: Samsung Galaxy XR or Apple Vision Pro.

The best VR headset for you depends more on what you already own than on specifications. Meta's Quest headsets work on their own, PS5 VR games only run on Sony's PS VR2, and most Steam VR games need a gaming PC.

Start with the setup table, then compare the six headsets side by side. Each pick below explains what it plays, what it costs at the maker's store and what it can't do.

How we chose and what we checked

We haven't tested these headsets side by side. We chose them from each maker's specifications and compatibility pages, and checked prices and stock at each maker's US store on 15 October 2026. Meta raised Quest prices on 19 April 2026, so older reviews may quote lower prices. Prices and stock change quickly; check before you buy. Read how we research.

Meta Quest 3S: the best VR headset for most people

Quest 3S is a standalone headset: games and apps run on the headset itself, and its cameras track your head and the two included controllers. It also shows your room in full colour for mixed reality, and it can connect to a Windows gaming PC by cable, Air Link or Steam Link when you want PC VR games.

Meta’s price is $349.99 for 128 GB and $449.99 for 256 GB, after a price rise on 19 April 2026 that Meta put down to the rising cost of memory chips. Even so, it’s the lowest-priced headset in this guide.

The savings come from the optics. Quest 3S has Fresnel lenses and a 1,832 × 1,920 display per eye, against Quest 3’s pancake lenses and 2,064 × 2,208, and a 96° horizontal field of view rather than 110°. Both play the same Quest games. Our Quest 3 vs Quest 3S comparison covers the differences in detail.

Choose it if it’s your first headset, you want VR games, fitness or social apps without a console or PC, or you’re buying for a child aged 10 or over. That’s Meta’s minimum age, and 10- to 12-year-olds need a parent-managed account; our VR headsets for kids guide has more. It can’t play PS5 VR games, and Meta keeps the sharper pancake lenses for Quest 3.

Meta Quest 3: for sharper lenses and PC VR

Quest 3 does everything Quest 3S does, with better optics: pancake lenses, 2,064 × 2,208 pixels per eye and a 110° horizontal field of view. It comes only with 512 GB of storage, at $599.99 from Meta.

That extra detail matters most for PC VR, reading text and watching films, which is why Quest 3 is our pick in the best VR headset for PC guide. Meta rates its battery at 2.2 hours, against 2.5 hours for Quest 3S; a battery strap adds more, as our Quest 3 accessories guide explains.

Choose it if you’ll play PC VR games, you notice blur or want the most storage. Skip it if the $250 difference matters more than clarity: Quest 3S plays the same games.

PS VR2: the only headset for PS5 VR games

If your games are on PS5, PS VR2 is the only headset that plays its VR games. It connects with a single USB-C cable and has a 2,000 × 2,040 OLED display per eye at 90 or 120 Hz, eye tracking and Sense controllers. Sony’s recommended price has been $399.99 since March 2025, according to the PlayStation Blog.

Finding one is the problem in the US. On 15 October 2026, Sony’s US store no longer listed the headset, though Sony’s UK store still had a product page. Our PS5 VR headset guide tracks where it’s sold and what to check before buying used. With Sony’s adapter, PS VR2 also works with a Windows PC; see our PS VR2 PC adapter guide.

Valve Steam Frame: for a Steam library, if you can wait

Valve’s Steam Frame is built to stream games wirelessly from a gaming PC through an included 6 GHz adapter, and Valve says it supports standalone play too. It tracks your eyes so the sharpest detail goes where you’re looking, which Valve calls foveated streaming. It has a 2,160 × 2,160 LCD panel per eye at 72 to 144 Hz (Valve calls 144 Hz experimental), and comes with controllers and Half-Life: Alyx, but no power supply.

On 15 October 2026, Valve’s store listed the 256 GB kit at $1,059 and the 1 TB kit at $1,299, but only as a waitlist that notifies you when units become available. Until you can buy one, Quest 3 plays SteamVR games from your PC through Steam Link or Meta Horizon Link. Our PC headset guide compares the PC routes.

Galaxy XR and Vision Pro: for films and apps more than games

These are premium mixed-reality headsets built around apps, video and work, with higher-resolution micro-OLED displays than any Quest. If games are your main reason to buy, start with Quest instead: Meta says its Quest catalog has thousands of titles.

  • Samsung Galaxy XR, from $1,799.99 at Samsung, runs Google’s Android XR with apps from the Google Play Store. It has a 4K micro-OLED display for each eye and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, and weighs 545 g. Its external battery gives up to 2.5 hours of video playback, and Samsung sells its gaming controller separately.
  • Apple Vision Pro, from $3,699 for 256 GB at Apple, has Apple’s M5 chip and micro-OLED displays with 23 million pixels across both eyes. Apple rates it at up to 2.5 hours of general use, and it weighs 750 to 800 g. You control it with your eyes, hands and voice, and it suits people who already use an iPhone and a Mac.

Other options

  • Bigscreen Beyond 2 and 2e: very light PC-only headsets, 107 g for the Beyond 2 headset alone according to Bigscreen, for people who already own SteamVR base stations and controllers. Our PC headset guide covers them, along with Pimax Crystal Light for sim racing and flight sims.
  • Phone VR viewers: a plastic headset that holds your phone plays 360° video and simple apps, not tracked VR games. See VR headsets under $50 and our VR headsets for iPhone guide.

Should you wait for a new headset?

Probably not. Meta’s Connect 2026 announcements on 23 September didn’t include a new Quest. Instead, Meta announced Meta VR Glasses: about 100 g glasses connected by cable to a separate compute puck, due in spring 2027 for $1,299.99. They’re a premium device, not a cheaper Quest.

Steam Frame is the other new arrival, but Valve’s store showed only a waitlist on 15 October 2026. And if you want PS5 VR, waiting for PS VR2 to return to Sony’s US store is a gamble: Sony hasn’t explained why it stopped listing it.

Best VR headset FAQ

What is the best VR headset right now?

For most people, Meta Quest 3S. It plays VR games on its own and, at $349.99 for 128 GB, costs the least of the headsets in this guide. Quest 3 is the better choice for sharper lenses and PC VR, and PS VR2 is the only option for PS5 VR games.

Is Meta Quest 4 coming out?

Meta hasn't announced one. Its Connect 2026 event on 23 September introduced Meta VR Glasses, a $1,299.99 device due in spring 2027, rather than a new Quest.

Is Quest 3 worth the extra over Quest 3S?

If you care about clarity or PC VR, yes: Quest 3 has pancake lenses, more pixels per eye and a wider field of view. If not, Quest 3S plays the same games for $250 less at Meta's prices.

Why did Quest prices go up?

Meta raised Quest 3 and Quest 3S prices from 19 April 2026, citing the rising cost of memory chips. Quest 3S now costs $349.99 for 128 GB or $449.99 for 256 GB, and Quest 3 costs $599.99.

Do you need a gaming PC for VR?

No. Quest 3S, Quest 3, Galaxy XR and Vision Pro all run apps on their own. You need a gaming PC for PC VR games, such as most of those on Steam, and PS VR2 needs a PS5 or a PC with Sony's adapter.

Which VR headset works with PS5?

Only PS VR2. Quest and PC headsets don't play PS5 VR games; see our PS5 VR headset guide.

What age is VR suitable for?

Meta's minimum age for Quest is 10, and children aged 10 to 12 need a parent-managed account. Check each app's age rating too; our VR headsets for kids guide has more.
