Which iPhone VR game should you try first?

Start with VR Jurassic - Dino Park World, VR Haunted House 3D or VR Space Roller Coaster Galaxy. All three had September 2026 updates in our 24 September check. For VR mode, use a Cardboard-style viewer that fits your iPhone. The other five games are older, and we haven't tested their compatibility with current iPhones. Check each App Store listing before downloading.

Trying VR on your iPhone starts with a game and a viewer that fits your screen. These games use Cardboard-style viewing, and several older apps may struggle on newer iPhones. Check the app requirements before buying a viewer.

Compare the eight games, then check the phone and viewer requirements. If you want tracked controllers and more games, see the standalone headset alternatives.

Best VR games for iPhone you can still download

All eight games below were free to download from the US App Store when we checked, and each listing describes a VR or Google Cardboard mode. Three of them were updated in September 2026: VR Jurassic - Dino Park World, VR Haunted House 3D and VR Space Roller Coaster Galaxy. Start with those. The other five are Cardboard-era games last updated between 2016 and 2018. They are still listed, but we can't confirm how well each one runs on current iPhones.

You need a Cardboard-style viewer that fits your iPhone's screen. Google stopped selling its own viewer in March 2021 (Engadget), but the free Google Cardboard app is still on the App Store, and third-party viewers are still sold. BattleZ VR, House of Terror VR and End Space, which were on earlier versions of this list, can no longer be downloaded on iPhone.

Best VR Games for iPhone

For this update, TechFuturae checked every game’s US App Store listing on 24 September 2026 for its developer, price, last update and VR support. We haven’t tested the games ourselves; the details below come from the store listings. We replaced three games that are no longer available with three that are (see Earlier picks for the removed ones). Every game is free to download; the prices below are the optional in-app purchases shown on each listing.

VR Jurassic - Dino Park World

  • What it is: a dinosaur park with three modes: Park (walk around and meet dinosaurs), Movie (a short story episode set on the island) and Roller Coasters (20 rides).
  • Developer: Vipera Games sp. z o.o.
  • VR mode: according to the App Store listing, all modes can be played in VR or in a normal 3D view.
  • Price (24 September 2026): free to download; the listing shows in-app purchases from $0.99 to $9.99 (such as “Unlock All” and unlocks for movies, roller coasters and dinosaurs) and says the app contains ads.
  • Last update: version 3.55, September 2026 (the release notes mention iOS 26 support and a fix for the VR menu button). Requires iOS 15.0 or later; about 1.5 GB.
  • App Store: VR Jurassic - Dino Park World

This is the most-rated game on this list, with about 19,000 US ratings averaging 4.5 stars when we checked. The listing names the dinosaurs you can meet, including Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops, Velociraptor, Stegosaurus and Brachiosaurus. Apple rates it 13+, and it has been on the App Store since December 2015 but still gets regular updates.

Zombie Shooter VR

  • What it is: a single-player action game in which you pick a weapon and fight zombies and mutants in deserted subway tunnels.
  • Developer: Fibrum
  • VR mode: the listing says it requires a Google Cardboard-like headset; you start by looking at a weapon to select it and then looking at the door.
  • Price (24 September 2026): free trial; the full game is a $1.99 in-app purchase.
  • Last update: version 1.7.6, December 2018 (first released November 18, 2014). iPhone only.
  • App Store: Zombie Shooter VR

If zombies are your thing, Zombie Shooter VR is a simple place to start: the listing describes deserted subway tunnels and gaze-based controls.

Story

The post-apocalyptic world you live in is full of bloodthirsty zombies that are waiting to get you. Choose a weapon, explore the deserted subway tunnels, and keep your eyes open for zombies or mutants that are eager to make you their next victim.

Features

According to the App Store listing, the game works on a freemium system: you can play free during a trial period, then unlock the full game by in-app purchase. It hasn’t been updated since December 2018, so check that it runs on your iPhone during the trial before paying.

Experience

There is no hunting for equipment: according to the listing, the game starts as soon as you look at a weapon to pick it and then look at the door. The free part of the game is a trial, and you pay $1.99 to keep playing the full game.

InCell VR

  • What it is: an action and racing game with some strategy, set inside a recreated human cell.
  • Developer: Luden.io, originally published by Nival (the App Store lists the developer as Ludenio Labs Ltd)
  • VR mode: built for Google Cardboard and similar viewers; according to the listing, you can also play without a headset by tapping and holding the screen to switch VR mode off.
  • Price (24 September 2026): free, with no in-app purchases listed.
  • Last update: version 1.4, November 2016 (on the App Store since December 2015). Runs on iPhone and iPad.
  • App Store: InCell VR (Cardboard)

InCell VR mixes racing with a little biology: you race through a recreated human cell and try to reach its nucleus before a virus does.

Story

Your goal is to save a volunteer, Mrs. Jane Smith. According to the Steam description, you collect proteins and speed boosts while racing toward the cell’s nucleus, and between races you choose which part of the cell to visit next for upgrades.

Features

There is also a free version on Steam. That version is a computer game rather than an iPhone download: VR mode needs a Windows PC with a SteamVR or Oculus PC headset (the Mac and Linux versions are non-VR), and the store page warns that newer headsets or software may cause launch, display or control problems. On the iPhone, the free Cardboard app is still listed and also has a non-VR mode.

Experience

The listing describes InCell as an action and racing game “with a bit of strategy and bio science thrown into the mix”. It is focused on VR, but it can also be played without a viewer. One App Store reviewer says the touch controls in non-VR mode are harder to use than the headset mode.

Romans From Mars 360

  • What it is: a single-player action and strategy game: you defend a castle wall with a crossbow against waves of Martian invaders.
  • Developer: Majesco Entertainment (listed as Majesco Games Corporation)
  • VR mode: the App Store listing says it is compatible with Google Cardboard and uses hands-free movement to launch arrows.
  • Price (24 September 2026): free, with no in-app purchases listed.
  • Last update: version 1.0.10, July 2016 (released on iPhone in November 2015; a Steam version followed on December 21, 2017). iPhone only.
  • App Store: Romans From Mars 360

Romans From Mars 360 is a VR version of Majesco’s Romans From Mars. You aim with hands-free movement, use elemental powers against enemies, and upgrade your weapon between waves.

Story

As a Roman soldier, you and your crossbow are the only hope of stopping the invading Martian army. Use your arrows and hands-free movement to keep the army out of your territory. Defend your castle walls, or you run the risk of Earth falling into the hands of the Romans from Mars.

Features

According to the App Store listing, you can upgrade your crossbow ballista and use Fire, Ice, Earth and Lightning powers, all in a colorful cartoon world with a 360-degree view. The iPhone version is free; the Steam version is a paid SteamVR game, not a free download.

Experience

The listing describes endless waves of Martians to hold off, with crossbow upgrades as you progress.

VR Haunted House 3D

  • What it is: a horror game in which you move through a haunted house, complete missions and fight monsters, with easy, medium and hard levels.
  • Developer: Erkan Yayman
  • VR mode: according to the App Store listing, you can play in VR Cardboard mode or in Normal mode. In Cardboard mode you move and fire where you look, or use the viewer’s magnet button to start and stop moving; a Bluetooth gamepad is also supported.
  • Price (24 September 2026): free to download; the listing says the app contains ads and offers a $4.99 in-app purchase to remove them.
  • Last update: version 1.0.21, September 2026. Requires iOS 15.0 or later; about 231 MB.
  • App Store: VR Haunted House 3D

This replaces House of Terror VR as the list’s horror pick. It has far fewer ratings than the other new picks (24 in the US store when we checked), and Apple rates it 18+, so it isn’t one for younger players. The developer recommends playing with a gamepad and headphones. For more scary games on other headsets, see our VR horror games guide.

Roller Coaster VR

  • What it is: a 360-degree roller coaster ride simulation.
  • Developer: Fibrum
  • VR mode: the listing says it requires a Google Cardboard-like headset.
  • Price (24 September 2026): free trial; the full game is a $1.99 in-app purchase.
  • Last update: version 1.9, December 2018 (first released November 2014). iPhone only.
  • App Store: Roller Coaster VR

Roller Coaster VR is a single-player ride simulation that gives you a first-person, 360-degree view of the track.

Story

According to the listing, the ride focuses on steep drops, high speed and extreme track twists.

Features

The listing describes a 360-degree 3D world with detailed graphics and carefully crafted sound. The iPhone version is still on the App Store, though it hasn’t been updated since December 2018.

Experience

The free part of the game is a trial; the full game costs $1.99.

VR Space Roller Coaster Galaxy

  • What it is: a space-themed VR experience: tour the solar system and compare the planets, take a spacewalk, and fly spaceship missions through asteroid fields.
  • Developer: Vipera Games sp. z o.o.
  • VR mode: the listing says it is made for Google Cardboard and works with many other VR viewers.
  • Price (24 September 2026): free to download; the listing shows in-app purchases from $0.99 to $9.99 and says the app contains ads.
  • Last update: version 1.31, September 2026 (the release notes mention iOS 26 support). Requires iOS 15.6 or later; about 725 MB.
  • App Store: VR Space Roller Coaster Galaxy

This takes the space slot that End Space used to fill. It is closer to a ride-and-explore experience than a space shooter, but unlike End Space it runs on an iPhone and is still maintained. It had about 1,500 US ratings averaging 4.5 stars when we checked, and Apple rates it 13+.

Final Kick VR

  • What it is: a soccer penalty-shootout game in which you take shots and make saves.
  • Developer: Ivanovich Games
  • VR mode: the App Store listing is titled “Virtual Reality free soccer game for Google Cardboard”.
  • Price (24 September 2026): free; an optional premium version costs $2.99.
  • Last update: version 1.0; the game hasn’t been updated since its June 2016 release. Runs on iPhone and iPad.
  • App Store: Final Kick VR

Final Kick VR is the sports game on this list. You play penalty shootouts, taking shots as the striker and making saves as the goalkeeper.

Story

The game recreates the tense moments of a penalty shootout, as if you were playing in a soccer final. You compete against top teams and try to score spectacular goals and make saves.

Features

According to the App Store listing, the controls are simple, and there are 20 offline tournaments against 100 teams that you can play without an internet connection. Earlier versions of this guide mentioned an online mode, but the current listing only mentions offline tournaments, so treat online play as unconfirmed.

Experience

Final Kick VR is free to play, with one optional premium upgrade.

Older games may not run on the newest iOS. InCell VR, Romans From Mars 360 and Final Kick VR haven't been updated since 2016, and the two Fibrum games since 2018. They are free to download, so try them before you rely on them, and use the free trial in the Fibrum games before paying for the full version.

What you need to play VR games on an iPhone

The games above are built for Cardboard-style viewers: a simple headset with two lenses that holds your iPhone in front of your eyes. Google no longer sells its own Cardboard viewer, but it still publishes the free Google Cardboard app for iPhone (iOS 15 or later), which sets up a viewer and includes a few demo experiences. Google made the Cardboard SDK open source in 2019, and it still supports iOS. To find more games, Google’s help page suggests searching the App Store for “Cardboard” or “Virtual Reality” (Google Cardboard Help).

Check the screen size before you buy a viewer. Google’s 2015 Cardboard design was made for phones with screens up to 6 inches (Wikipedia), while most iPhones Apple sells today have 6.1- to 6.9-inch displays (Apple). Pick a viewer that lists your screen size. A Bluetooth game controller helps in games that support one, such as VR Haunted House 3D. For headset options, see our guides to VR headsets for iPhone SE, VR headsets for iPhone 7 and 7 Plus and smartphones for virtual reality.

Alternatives: VR headsets that work alongside an iPhone

Phone VR games are simple compared with games made for standalone headsets. If you want current VR games with tracked controllers, these are the realistic options for an iPhone owner:

  • Meta Quest 3S and Quest 3: standalone headsets that don’t need a PC or a phone to play. Both are sold on Meta’s site (Quest 3S, Quest 3) and on Amazon (Quest 3S, Quest 3). You set them up with the Meta Horizon app, which is available for iPhone and also lets you buy and install games and cast what you see in the headset to your phone (Meta Quest Help). Our Quest 3 vs Quest 3S comparison covers the differences.
  • Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s headset now uses the M5 chip and runs visionOS games with hand tracking (Apple). Since November 2025 Apple has sold PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers for select Vision Pro games (9to5Mac). It is sold only in select countries, and Apple offers in-store demos before you buy (Apple).
  • AR glasses: if you mainly want a big virtual screen for games and video rather than VR, see our guide to AR glasses for iPhone.

FAQ

Are there still VR games for iPhone?

Yes. All eight games in this guide were on the US App Store when we checked in September 2026, and three of them (VR Jurassic - Dino Park World, VR Haunted House 3D and VR Space Roller Coaster Galaxy) were updated in September 2026. To find others, search the App Store for "Cardboard" or "VR" and check the last update date before paying for anything.

Do I need a VR headset to play these games?

For VR mode, yes: you need a Cardboard-style viewer that holds your iPhone. According to their App Store listings, InCell VR, VR Jurassic - Dino Park World and VR Haunted House 3D can also be played without a headset, while Zombie Shooter VR and Roller Coaster VR require one.

Does Google Cardboard still work with an iPhone?

Yes. Google stopped selling its own viewer in March 2021, but the Google Cardboard app is still on the App Store and was last updated in December 2025. Third-party Cardboard-style viewers work with it, as long as they fit your iPhone's screen.

Which games on this list are free?

All eight are free to download. When we checked, InCell VR and Romans From Mars 360 list no in-app purchases. Final Kick VR offers a $2.99 premium version, Zombie Shooter VR and Roller Coaster VR are free trials with a $1.99 full game, and the three games updated in 2026 show ads and optional in-app purchases.

What's the best VR headset for an iPhone owner?

For games, a Meta Quest 3S or Quest 3 is the most practical choice: it runs games on its own and is set up with the Meta Horizon app on your iPhone. Apple Vision Pro is Apple's premium option; its games mostly use hand tracking, with PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers supported in select titles.

Conclusion

As of September 2026, all eight games on this list can be downloaded from the US App Store, and there is one for most tastes: dinosaurs, zombies, racing inside a cell, castle defense, horror, roller coasters, space and soccer. If you are new to phone VR, start with the three games that were updated in September 2026, since they are the most likely to run well on a current iPhone.

Your iPhone and a viewer that fits it are all you need to get started. If you know a VR game for iPhone that should be on this list, let us know.

Earlier picks no longer on the App Store

These games were on earlier versions of this list. We removed them because you can no longer download them on an iPhone.

BattleZ VR (Realiteer Corp, 2016) was a multiplayer first-person shooter in which you teamed up with friends to defend your home from zombies. Its App Store and Google Play listings both returned "not found" pages when we checked.

House of Terror VR (developed by Bloompix Studios and listed on Lakento's site) was a horror adventure with puzzles, traps and monsters. Lakento's House of Terror VR page still lists an iOS version, but its App Store link points to a listing that no longer exists. VR Haunted House 3D is the horror pick in its place.

End Space VR (Justin Wasilenko, 2017) is a space combat game for headsets, not an iPhone app. Its phone version, End Space VR for Cardboard, was renamed Minos Starfighter in November 2016, and we couldn't find a current App Store listing for it. The official site lists Oculus Rift, Quest and Go, PlayStation VR and SteamVR versions.

This guide replaces an earlier version by John, first published January 2020.
