In the world of premium mobile VR headsets, there are only a few companies that stand out.
Groups like Homido, Destek, and Polaroid all stand above the rest. The build quality is nice and the group’s put the user experience at the forefront.
I wanted to take an in-depth look at the Destek v4 VR Headset to see how it stacks up to the competition.
Does it live up to the hype?
Things to Consider Before Buying a Mobile VR Headset
Mobile VR is pretty dope, but it isn’t for everyone. The technology can put you in outer space, on a roller coaster, or a shark cage. The trade-off for these experiences is that some people get motion sickness, while others get headaches.
The best mobile VR customer to me is someone new to using the technology and wants to test it out.
These headsets let you try out VR without dropping a serious amount of coin, but you should consider the following before buying one.
- Mobile device - You should take your smartphone into consideration before buying a headset. Your device should be able to fit inside of the headset you use. Most mobile headsets fit phones up to 6 inches, so if you have a mega-sized phone you’ll need to find one that can handle it.
- Goals - What do you want to do with VR? Do you want in-depth games? Do you want to watch 360 videos? The goals of what you want to do with mobile VR will dictate what headset you choose.
- Budget - You should take your budget into consideration with VR. There are devices for every budget, but the bells and whistles will change accordingly.
- iOS or Android? - VR is better developed on the Android platform than iOS, but Apple users can still use it. If you use an iPhone, you need to consider what is available as it’s limited when compared to the competition.
- Controller or no controller - A lot of mobile VR headsets come with controllers. If you’re using iOS, these are virtually useless, as iPhones need special controllers. If you’re on Android, they’re a nice touch and can enhance your VR experience.

Destek’s v4 VR headset is a premium mobile VR headset from the company. I love the new look and feel.
Destek has implemented IPD adjustment, more nasal space, and lenses to reduce eye strain.

Features and Benefits
Video
Destek has done a great job with the v4’s visual quality. These lenses are fantastic.
The 103-degree FoV is better than many other sets and the anti-blue light coating keeps my eyes from getting strained. The end result is great video quality. If you look at the video below, you can see the blue coating on the lenses (1:10 mark).
Audio
There isn’t any built-in audio with this headset. While that’s a bit of a bummer, I was able to easily hook my headphones up to my phone. That is the best way to get audio, as the headset itself does block out a lot of sounds.
Comfort
The Destek v4 is comfortable, allowing you to use it for prolonged periods of time. I found the head strap fits nicely on my melon, with the foam giving a firm seal on my face. I also never had any issues with fog due to use, which I can’t say some of Destek’s competition.
Build Quality
All of Destek’s headsets are well-built. The v4 stands up to this legacy and feels solid without being a brick.
I’ve dropped this device a few times and while it’s popped open, it never fell apart or broke in any way.
This is interesting, as the headset seems to be built of generic plastic, foam, and acrylic.
Software
There isn’t any proprietary software with this headset. Instead, you’re able to load apps from your phone’s app store. On iOS you’ll find some limited apps, with things better developed on Android. I recommend checking out the Go VR Player, Google Cardboard, and Discovery VR apps for some of the best VR video content.
Full Experience
When you take all of the features mentioned above and combine them, you get a good mobile VR experience. I love how sturdy the thing feels and the excellent lens quality.
If I’m going to gripe about anything, its the lack of built-in audio and app from Destek. Some other VR companies like Homido have their own apps that forward users to good VR apps. That would have been nice to see here.
What Others Are Saying About the Destek v4 VR Headset
Destek is one of the most popular mobile VR headset developers. As such, there are a bunch of people who love the v4 as much as I do. I took a long look across the internet and found the following users who like the Destek v4.
Alternatives to the Destek v4 VR Headset
I’ve found that mobile VR is generally the same no matter what you use for a headset.
This means that there are a lot of other choices if you don’t want to buy the Destek v4.
I’ve put together the following list of good alternatives for you to consider.
Polaroid Virtual Reality Headset
I am a big fan of the Polaroid VR Headset. It has great build quality and brings the Polaroid brand, which is globally known. I think that the Polaroid stacks up well to the Destek, even if its field of view (FOV) isn’t as wide.
- Good build quality
- Excellent lenses
- Works with Android or iOS
- FoV isn’t as wide
- Fogs up a bit with prolonged use
- Sound doesn’t travel as well through speaker holes
Oculus Go
- Personal Viewing: The littlest, big screen. Crystal clear optics and state-of-the-art 3D graphics make your headset feel more like a personal theater
- Viewing with Friends: Watch with friends. Meet up in VR with friends and fans from around the world to catch live sports, concerts, or just your favorite TV show
Okay, this one isn’t a mobile headset, but I love it. It is wireless and has the Oculus ecosystem built in, giving the best VR experiences you’ll find. I have dumped dozens of hours into mine and I use it daily.
If you want to put in a bit more of an investment, you can’t go wrong with the Go. Read my full review of the headset here.
- Very comfortable
- Lenses are high quality
- 3 degrees of freedom
- Doesn’t require a smartphone
- Uses Oculus ecosystem
- Includes a remote

Shinecon puts out quality headsets, and this one is no exception.
The headset has built-in headphones, is comfortable, and compatible with all smartphones up to 6 inches. It includes a controller (which kinda sucks), but is great for using your smartphone. I have this one in a travel bag for use on trips for the kids.

Conclusion
I recommend the Destek v4 VR Headset to new users of mobile VR.
